Quilting is the art of stitching together layers of fabric to create a padded textile, often as a functional item like a blanket or as a piece of art.
This craft is both ancient and modern, crossing cultures and generations. For a complete beginner, quilting may seem like a vast world to navigate, but understanding its foundations — its history, techniques, and styles — makes it a fascinating and accessible art form.
At its core, quilting involves three layers:
1. The Top Layer: This is usually decorative and consists of pieced-together fabric scraps or a single piece of fabric with a printed design.
2. The Middle Layer (Batting/Wadding): This provides the quilt's warmth and bulk, typically made from wool, cotton, or synthetic materials.
3. The Bottom Layer (Backing): A single piece of fabric that complements the top layer.
These layers are sewn together using stitches, which can be decorative or simple.
Quilting can serve many purposes, from keeping warm to preserving memories or showcasing artistic creativity.
How Can You Start Quilting?
Are you inspired to try your hand at quilting? Here's how you can begin.
Start Simple
Having said that, I did not follow my own advice. Instead, for the very first quilting project ever, I embarked on a queen-sized, nine-patch, 14 x 16 block quilt and inserted an all-round border with mitred corners!
It was not until I had made a few blocks that I realised that I, as a total beginner to quilting, had underestimated the amount of work involved. But what kept me going to complete the project was that it was intended as a gift for my very young grandniece. I wanted her to have something that would last her a lifetime and something she could pass on to the next generation, if she so wished.
This 'masterpiece' (image right), once completed, was then sent off to a long-arm quilting service provider to join the three layers together with an attractive stitch design. It did not take me long, after that process, to attach a light blue binding to finish off the entire project. This quilt now graces her huge bed.
But I digress...
Begin with a basic patchwork quilt. This approach allows you to practise piecing pre-cut fabrics together using straight stitching. This will allow you to get the 'hang' of things without feeling overwhelmed while, also, allowing your creative imagination free rein. Fortunately, many beginner-friendly kits include easy-to-follow instructions.
Learn from the Experts
Join a quilting class or follow online tutorials. Buy books on the subject written especially for quilting beginners. Many experienced quilters share their wisdom and techniques through YouTube channels, blogs, and virtual workshops. You'll find guidance on everything from selecting fabrics to mastering advanced techniques. Most of the techniques are demonstrated completely free of charge. So take advantage of these before spending money on paid courses.
Invest in the Right Tools
A quality sewing machine and a few essential quilting supplies (eg, rotary cutters, a cutting mat or two) are essential. While hand quilting is rewarding, many beginners find machine quilting more accessible and, certainly, quicker to finish!
