Quilting Techniques

There are several quilting techniques, each offering different levels of complexity and styles:

Patchwork Quilting: Combining small fabric pieces into a larger design, creating geometric patterns like squares, circles, triangles, or hexagons;

Nine-patch Block Quilting Technique

Whole-Cloth Quilting: A single piece of fabric is used for the top layer, with stitching patterns creating the design;

Appliqué: Cutting out fabric shapes of a variety of items (such as a dog, cat, house, flower, horse, cow, chicken, eggs, etc) and attaching these items onto the quilt blocks and then sewing around the edges of the appliqué shape to provide both texture and added interest.

English Paper Piecing:
A hand-sewn method using paper templates for precise shapes. The fabric is cut 1/4" larger than the template, folded over, and basted. Then, once the pieces are handsewn at the folds, the paper template is removed.

Modern tools like rotary cutters, electric and computerized sewing machines as well as quilting software and quilting fabric and appliqué kits have made these techniques much easier, especially for beginners. As a result, quilting projects can be completed far more quickly and easily than was the case when these tools and resources were not available.
